The state government has identified the Velsao-Pale beach stretch in South Goa for Blue Flag certification, following the Union ministry for environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) asking the state to nominate a beach for clean-up and developmental activities, official sources said.
In a written reply to a question raised by South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar in the Lok Sabha, Union tourism minister Mahesh Sharma said the government was striving for Blue Flag certification for certain identified beaches in country under the Integrated Coastal Management Programme.

The programme aims at enhancing standards of cleanliness, upkeep and basic amenities at beaches. All coastal states, including Goa, have identified beaches for a pilot exercise under the programme, it was informed.

Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education, a non-profit organisation consisting of 65 groups in 60 member countries in Europe, Africa, Oceania, Asia, North America and South America. Spain has held the first position for nearly three decades since the awards for beach management began in 1987.
The Blue Flag is sought for beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.
