Goa Tourism is all set to celebrate the annual festivals of colour, culture and cuisine, namely Shigmo and the Goa Food and Cultural Festival 2016.
Shigmo is celebrated in Goa as spring’s biggest festival which honored the homecoming of the warriors who had left their homes and families at the end of Dussehra to fight the invaders. During Shigmo, traditional folk dances and depiction of mythological scenes through parades all across the state is the major highlight. People dress in colorful outfits, hold colourful flags and play musical instruments like the Dhol Tasha, Flutes and go in procession.
This year the Shigmo Utsav festivities are scheduled to begin from March 24 and will culminate on April 7, 2016 and the Goa Food and Cultural Festival 2016 is scheduled to begin from April 6-10.
The two events are expected to draw lakhs of tourists to Goa as it coincides with the commencement of the summer vacations.
The first Shigmo parade commenced on Thursday, March 24 (Holi) at Ponda.
The annual Goa Food and Cultural Festival 2016 will commence on April 6-10 at the D B Bandodkar Ground, Campal, Panjim. This year the five day event has an exciting line up of an activity which includes cooking competitions, cooking demos and a live distillation unit.
Music and Dance performances by various groups namely Goenchim Noketram, Indian Ocean, Dance to the Beats, Rhythm and Blues, Kepemchim Kirnnam, Lagori, the Big T Band, Bollywood Hip Hop and Dance Fusion, Thermal and Quarter, Taaq, Bad Blood and One Night Stand have been lined up during the five day event.
Minister for Tourism, Dilip Parulekar said “Festivals in Goa are celebrated with much enthusiasm both by the locals and tourists. Goa celebrates a large number of festivals all through the year. However, Shigmo is one event that shows how vibrant Goa’s culture is. So also, the Goa Food and Cultural Festival is much loved and enjoyed by everyone who attends it. This year too Goa promises a festive mood and food that will set summer vacations a buzz.
The Goa Food and Cultural Festival is a platform giving tourists a platter of cuisine both Goan and fusion of Indian and Western flavours. We want tourists from India and the international sectors to visit Goa and witness Goa’s vibrant culture and cuisine.”

The four-day long weekend starting with the festival of Holi has brought a cheer to the tourism trade as domestic tourists are arriving in large numbers to Goa.
PANAJI:
This is evident from the fact that a number of top five star hotels like Resort Rio, Grand Hyatt, Novotel and Goa Marriott Resort & Spa are booked to capacity from 24 to 27 March.
Atish Fernandes, director, business development, First Class Holidays, said, “The good demand that we are seeing during this long weekend is not only because of holiday-makers, but it is also because of people who have already reached Goa for Defexpo.”
Defexpo is happening in Quitol, Quepem from 28 to 31 March, which means immediately after this long weekend. A lot of officials from companies participating in Defexpo are reaching Goa before to take care of arrangements like stall and etc, which is also contributing to the demand during this weekend.
Naturally, the tariffs have skyrocketed too. For instance, Taj – Fort Aguada is charging Rs 32,388 per night if you check in on March 24th and check out on March 27th. The Leela Goa in Cavelossim is charging Rs 28,502 per night in the same time-frame. Taj Exotica in Benaulim is charging Rs 27,158 per night for this long weekend.
Even 3-star and 4-star properties are seeing good demand during this weekend. Shashi Kalro, owner, The Camelot Group Resorts in Calangute, said, “We are close to 90% booked during this weekend. But, this shows a spike because occupancy rates before this weekend and after this weekend are low.”
Karlo continued, “Because of this, when you look at your overall balance-sheet, you realise that you haven’t done all that well.”
Many hoteliers also say that last charter flights arrive in Goa in March itself thereby limiting the season, which indicates that occupancy rates fall sharply just after March.
So, in a way, this long weekend and the upcoming Defexpo have come as a blessing in disguise for tourism trade because they have brought demand in what would otherwise have been off-peak time.

The incident was a direct fall-out of the Bombay high court at Goa’s order on Monday declining to provide any relief to the owners of private cars who have been renting out their vehicles to tourists without the rent-a-car permit. The HC order directs the transport department to consider the applications within eight weeks and take a decision whether to issue rent-a-car permits or not, as it is the appropriate authority to do so.
In recent weeks, following demands from the North Goa tourist taxi owners association (NGTTOA), the RTO had formed a flying squad to stop tourists from driving around in private vehicles without a rent-a-car permit, and the squad had been fining the owners and seized a large number of cars.
On Wednesday, owners of private cars who have been renting them out illegally attempted to block the flying squad at the Dolphin circle and also released some cars without paying the fine, claiming the HC order had directed the transport department to issue them the rent-a-car permits within six days.
Following this, a large number of tourist taxi owners led by office bearers of the NGTTOA also gathered at the spot to insist that the flying squad seize the cars and fine the owners, leading to a tense situation. A large number of policemen from the Calangute police station led by PI Tushar Vernekar was stationed at the spot and separated the two groups on two sides of the road to prevent any untoward incident.
Arguments and counter arguments continued till evening with the NGTTOA demanding that the flying squad go strictly by the book and seize the cars, while the rent-a-cab association members urged the flying squad to restrain themselves in view of the HC order. Owners of private cars also attempted to stop taxis which were being driven by taxi owners without the mandatory uniform. “If they want us to go by the rules, then they should also go by the rules,” Nitesh Chodankar, vice-president of the North Goa rent-a-cab association said.
Meanwhile, Vinayak Nanoskar, NGTTOA secretary, said that false rumours are being spread amongst the private car owners about the HC order by the members of the rent-a-cab association, and urged them to wait for the transport department to decide on their applications. “They’re giving interviews to TV channels and media claiming that the transport department has been directed to give them rent-a-car permits, which is not correct,” he said. A few days ago, the NGTTOA had threatened to go on a strike on April 11 if the transport department issues licences to the illegal private rental cars.
On the other hand, a large number of tourists are seen driving around Calangute in illegal private rental cars with white number plates, with taxi owners at various spots stopping these cars and summoning the flying squad to the spot, leading to tourists complaining of harassment. Many tourists now opt to rent cars in neighbouring states and drive down to Goa in these outstation cars, according to sources. Tourists have always complained of the high taxi fares in Goa.
