“Another of GTDC’s tall claims.”
The much-hyped introduction of amphibious vessels – vehicles that can be operated on land as well as sea – which had been deferred till date due to delay in permission from various authorities, will likely start by the end of the month. Tourism department expects to get all clearances for starting the amphibious buses by May-end.
Tourism minister Dilip Parulekar on Tuesday told reporters that though there has been a delay, they are sure of starting the service by the end of the tourist season. For Goa, tourist season starts in October-November and concludes by May-end.
Goa is the first state in the country to launch the amphibious bus service. Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC) has three indigenously-built buses with foreign technology.
The soft launch of these amphibious buses was carried out a few months ago. GTDC had to put its plans of starting the service full-fledged on hold due to difficulty in securing the various permissions required, most importantly that of the transport department.
Apparently, transport authorities were in a fix as this is a first-of-its-kind transport service and does not completely come under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, an official said.

UB chairman Vijay Mallya received another jolt, this time from the Goa government, which has rejected his company’s application to start an offshore casino on the River Mandovi.
The billionaire liquor baron who is in trouble due to alleged financial transactions and non-payment of huge debt, has been told that the request for licence to start a casino made by one of his holding company — UB Infrastructure Projects Limited (UIPB) got a no for an answer despite making 16 representations for the casino licence over a span of a decade.
UB Infrastructure Projects Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Breweries (Holding) Limited.

The state government has asked the national centre for sustainable coastal management (NCSCM) to conduct a study assessing the carrying capacity of beaches for erection of shacks, mapping of sand dunes and preparation of coastal zone management plan (CZMP).
While the beach shack policy 2013-16 is valid up to the end of the current tourist season, a report on the carrying capacity is expected to be submitted by August 2016.
NCSCM is also expected to submit another report on mapping of sand dunes by August. The CZMP is to be handed in by September 2016. Director-cum-joint secretary (environment) Srinet Kotwale issued a letter naming the autonomous centre of ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) for the three studies.
Tourism department permits more than 300 temporary structures on the state’s beaches every season and they are dismantled by May 31. While complaints of pollution by shacks due to problems of waste and sewage management problems have been rife, the recent MoEF decision to allow them to continue standing on the condition that they do not conduct business, did not go down well in some quarters.
The destruction of sand dunes, which are a second line of defence in the coastal belt, has been another touchy issue for environmental activists.
