A year and half after its commissioning, complaints about tardy planning and uncleanliness at the new terminal building of the Goa international airport have not ceased. Conditions at the airport may improve as plans to spruce up the premises are afoot before the eighth annual summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), scheduled from October 15-16 in Goa.

The airport administration has decided to introduce some greenery in the front portion of the airport though there is not much scope for any big plans.

Airport director at Goa international airport B C H Negi, who took charge in April, said they face limitations in terms of land but a little green area will be created.

The plan included a green wall comprising creepers, and some ornamental plants. The beautification plan, he said, was conceived before the announcement of the BRICS summit.

Besides, lounges at Goa airport will see some change. A traveller, whose last visit toDabolim airport was last month, said the business lounge “is pathetic. It does not befit an international airport”.

Goa airport administration has received a lot of flak for unhygienic conditions of its wash rooms and above all for the pitiful planning of the building.

On the cleanliness front, Negi said things would improve once the new contract becomes operational. “It should happen in a month or two,” he said.

He said that under the contract still in operation, manpower was only 46 persons but the new contract has increased it to 170 persons.

“There will be one attendant per washroom at all times,” he said, indicating that the maintenance of cleanliness would be resolved once and for all.

The new contract for cleaning is expected to be operational in two months.

Other issues plaguing Goa airport is related to the parking facility. He refused to elaborate on the issue, saying they are still struggling with the issue.

He added that he would also undertake an inspection of areas in and around the airport, as well as have a meeting with the South Goa district magistrate.

In the past, bird hits have affected flight operations at Dabolim airport. Some of the reasons include improper disposal of waste, and increased habitation near the airport.

“I think, a greater level of awareness is needed to solve the garbage problem,” he said.

Oxel-Siolim meet opposes Chapora tourism project

Does the government really care about its people on the ground? Or is it all about profits before people?

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Oxel-Siolim-meet-opposes-Chapora-tourism-project/articleshow/52391916.cms

The village panchayat of Oxel-Siolim has strongly opposed the new multi-purpose project along River Chapora and called on chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar to rethink the project. The 1,000 crore project includes a marina, ferry terminal, tourist village, museum and aquarium project. Sources said that the chief minister had recently held a meeting with the eight gram panchayats concerned to discuss the project. The Oxel panchayat claimed that the project will spell doom for local fishermen.

The Oxel panchayat body claimed that the Chapora river development project will include a marina and ferry terminal costing 100 crore, a tourist village and fisherman’s wharf costing 100 crore, the museum and hotel complex costing another estimated 200 crore, the aquarium, sea world and bird park costing 300 crore, adventure sports island costing 100 crore and water transport service utilities and cable car costing 200 crore.

The project has been developed under the Chapora river development committee. Panchayat claimed that the chief minister has convened a meeting with the panchayats of Agarwada, Oxel, Marna , Morjim, Parsem, Tuem and Camurlim to discuss the project.

“The project will have worse effects than casinos. The coastal belt of Pernem will be blocked by the project,” Oxel sarpanch Raju Parab said.

Parab who is supported by his panch members said that the project stretching from Morjim to Colvale along River Chapora is portrayed as a 1,000 crore project but in reality it is more than that to facilitate business for outsiders.

“The project is coming in the locals’ area, the project land belongs to locals and there is no need of job opportunities for locals along the belt as fishing activity is enough for them,” Parab said.

life guards to resume duty

The government has no choice but to concede the demands of an important working sector in tourism. If it can pay virtually redundant officers and politicians handsome compensation packages, why cant the working class get a just wage?

Terminate Drishti’s contract, says Lobo

When will the Tourism department wake up and side the people ?

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has demanded that the tourism department terminate the contract with Drishti life saving and take over lifeguard services on Goa’s beaches through the Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC).

Speaking at the Calangute beach promenade, where the striking lifeguards had gathered on Saturday afternoon, he said that it is unfair that the safety of tourists is being compromised due to Drishti’s negligence towards the lifeguards who, he alleged, are being mistreated by Drishti.

“All the equipment, lifeguard towers, jetskis, surf boards, jeeps, etc, all belong to the tourism department. Drishti only provides the management services. This can easily be done by the GTDC’s administrative staff, who, at present are hardly doing anything. I am going to take up this matter with the chief minister,” he assured the striking lifeguards. Around 300 striking Drishti lifeguards led by AITUC leader Christopher Fonseca staged a morcha on Calangute beach demanding that the government fulfill the assurances given to them.
