Disaster in the making

Reducing the NDZ to 50mts is doom not only for the people but for the ecology. If this was to benefit the people as they say so, then why was it kept so secret ? Why was there a need for an RTI application to go to the information commissioner to get the report released.

Tourists use respite to throng Calangute coast

The break in rain on Wednesday, after the continuous downpour witnessed since Sunday, saw a large number of domestic tourists making their way to shores along the Calangute-Candolim beach belt.

The stretch witnessed high tourist arrivals this monsoon because of the tourism department’s monsoon tourism promotions and the discounts offered by resorts and hotels, particularly for group bookings.

Vendors selling raincoats and umbrellas conducted brisk business along theCALANGUTE beach belt as tourists who were caught in the continuous downpour had to buy rainwear.

The heavy rain also led to waterlogging at many spots, particularly where construction of new resorts and other properties have led to the blocking of traditional water drains.

Residents of Orda, Candolim, who have built houses on the steep slope of the hill that forms the Candolim-Calangute-Saligao-Pilerne plateau, were worst affected as rainwater from a large part of the plateau, which drains down the Orda side, entered their houses.

A road in Calangute, which had been hot-mixed in December last year, sunk at many spots creating ditches that the public works department (PWD) has filled with stone rubble as a temporary measure. PWD workers were also seen filling potholes as several mishaps involving two-wheelers riders were reported.

There were a number of minor cases of tree branches falling. The Pilerne fire brigade was called in to clear the road near the Aguada jail after a tree got uprooted on Tuesday evening.

On the plus side, sludge that had enveloped roads in Calangute post digging for the sewerage network was washed away.

Goa appeals for daily trains to Dudhsagar

Parulekar should also see that the infrastructure for garbage collection and other amenities should be in place as well. Its not just about getting daily trains plying to Dudhsagar.

Tourism minister Dilip Parulekar has appealed to Union minister for railways Suresh Prabhu to intervene and request the Indian Railways to operate trains from Vasco to Dudhsagar on a daily basis without “unreasonable restrictions” to enable tourists to visit and view the cascading Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Parulekar, in a communique to Prabhu has assured that the Goa tourism department will co-ordinate and cooperate with the local district administration to ensure that all safety measures are in place and that lives of tourists are not endangered in any way.

Dudhsagar waterfalls was well-connected by the South Central Railways in the past. Last year, railway authorities banned passengers from alighting at Dudhsagar falls citing safety reasons.

The tourism minister has pointed out that with the onset of the monsoon, tourists are expressing disappointment at not being able to visit and view Dudhsagar falls.

Parulekar has drawn the attention of the Union minister for railways to that fact that Goa is promoting monsoon tourism in a big way and tourists holidaying in Goa wish to add Dudhsagar waterfalls to their itinerary.

The waterfalls which cascade through the Western Ghats is very popular and has become a must-visit after the success of the Bollywood movie ‘Chennai Express’.

“It is observed that after the success of this movie, large numbers of foreign and domestic tourists are desirous of visiting this place, which is indeed a site to behold, especially during the monsoon season,” said the minister.

Monsoon tourism

Yes monsoon tourism should be promoted with focus on places with natural springs . However even before such places are opened to tourists, the infrastructure around these places need to be developed and people around these places need to be sensitized .
