Pursuing investigation in the Bhoma road robbery case, which later turned out to be a prostitution racket involving a minor girl, Ponda police booked fourteen people including two women on Tuesday evening. The arrested have allegedly been operating an interstate racket from Maharashtra and Goa for a long time.

The police have also rearrested the four accused involved in the road robbery case, which occurred on August 10 and sought five days’ police custody of the accused on Wednesday in order to nab the others.
On August 10, a police patrol had intercepted a taxi at Dharbandora, which was robbed by its passengers, after they assaulted the driver and threw him out. A 15-year-old girl was also rescued and sent to remand home.
During the interrogation, it was revealed that the minor girl was forced into prostitution and was being taken to Kolhapur. The girl was brought from Mumbai toKolhapur and then to Panaji and was confined in hotel rooms for the purpose of prostitution. She was then exploited sexually by two men at a Panaji hotel and by two others at Kolhapur before that, Ponda police said.

Proposed Betul port will affect tourism: Cavelossim

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Proposed-Betul-port-will-affect-tourism-Cavelossim/articleshow/53902425.cms

Protests against the proposed minor port in the neigbouring Betul village and nationalization of river Sal dominated the proceedings of the Cavelossim village panchayat on Sunday.

Gram sabha members demanded that a port at Betul would hamper tourism activities in Cavelossim, thereby affecting the tourism industry.

They said that the ore or coal transportation to the port would cause severe noise and dust pollution which would result in less tourist inflow into Cavelossim.

“With the advent of tourism in Goa, people residing in the coastal village of Cavelossim left their traditional occupations like fishing, toddy tapping, etc and ventured into tourism-related activities to earn their livelihoods. If the tourism industry is affected, the source of livelihood of these villagers will be at stake,” they said, and adopted a resolution to oppose the project at Betul.

Gram sabha members further pointed out that River Sal was among the rivers across the country which were proposed to be nationalized, and voiced their objections to the proposal.
Villagers raised apprehensions that nationalization of River Sal would lead to unwanted projects like marinas being set up in the villages.

Blacklist beach cleaning contractor to prevent back door entry.

We should ensure that not only these companies are black listed but even other companies floated by the very same contractors should be banned . We know how new companies can be floated overnight, where just the company name changes and the rest is the same

‘Ultimately, melting ice caps affect coastal regions’

Our coasts lines are receding, Sea water levels are rising and although we may not want to come to terms with the fact but  one of the main reasons for all this unchecked and unplanned development without giving a serious though to its effects on ecology and nature.

Over the years, the vast ice cover around the North Pole has shrunk due to global warming. This has led to rise in sea levels which ultimately affects coastal regions like Goa, said Goa Science Centre and Planetarium, director, M M K Balaji.

“Due to the melting of the ice caps, the water is denser than the normal sea water, raising the sea level. This ultimately affects coastal regions as they are likely to submerge. Goa will definitely feel the impact,” he said.

He further added that from 1950 till date, the average global temperature has been increasing continuously. “Since then, it has increased by 0.9 degrees celsius,” said Balaji.

He attributed a number of factors that are adding to global warming. “In Goa, there is rampant deforestation and conversion of agricultural land into developmental zones for real estate. Air pollution owing to dense traffic also increases chlorofluorocarbons (CFC). All these factors indirectly impact the arctic region,” he said.
Explaining this phenomenon, through a series of stunning images of the Norwegian Young Sea Ice Expedition 2015, the centre in collaboration with the Royal Norwegian consulate general has organized an exhibition titled ‘On Thin Ice’.

January 2015, the Norwegian Polar Institute sent its research vessel into the North Pole. On board were researchers who wanted explanations for climate change. These researchers took measurements in the constant polar night and concluded that people living in low-lying coastal areas will be affected as a result of melting glaciers.

The exhibition consists of the knowledge gathered from this expedition. The Goa Science Centre is organizing the exhibition till September 22 at its premises inMiramar. From Goa, the exhibition will travel to Delhi and then Norway.
