Times of India’s vested interests in promoting Uber.

It is now clear that TOI has a vested interest in campaigning against tourist Taxi owners and drivers. They have invested 150 crores in Uber. The corporates are at play when they pretend that they want a clean up of taxi operations.

Uber Technologies Inc. said the publisher of India’s most-read English newspaper has taken a small stake in the ride-hailing application company as part of a strategic partnership to support its expansion.

Uber counts India as its biggest market outside the U.S. and the fastest growing globally. Baidu Inc., China’s largest Internet search engine, in December agreed to invest in Uber and said the company will connect its map and mobile-search features with the ride-hailing service.

Uber’s service is available in 11 Indian cities and offers three types of cars, including hatchbacks for as little as 7 rupees (11 cents) a kilometer.

The investment made by Times Internet is worth about 1.5 billion rupees ($24 million), the Indian company said in an e-mailed reply to a question. The Economic Times newspaper, also published by Bennett, Coleman, had first reported the value of the deal citing people familiar with the transaction.

‘Build Awareness’

“We are working on smart promotions and integrations to build awareness and excitement around Uber, which you’ll see in the coming months,” Satyan Gajwani, chief executive officer of Times Internet, said in a separate e-mailed response to questions. “We will help Uber with market insights, product localizations, and other India specific requirements.”

Uber’s safety record was called into question in December after a rider said she was raped by an Uber driver in New Delhi. The driver was arrested and is on trial.

Following the rape, the government of Delhi banned Uber from operating in the Indian capital. In January, Uber said it had applied to be regulated under a New Delhi taxi system and will hire drivers who recently passed police background checks, as well as conduct independent background checks.

Times of India bats for concealed enemies of Goa’s taxi operators.

Times of India has admitted to launching a campaign against Goan taxi owners and drivers . In the last fortnight or so they have collected articles and views from a range of seemingly uninformed and prejudiced group of writers. obviously none of them has sat across the table with a taxi driver. Nor have they talked to ” the real tourist ” who has returned to Goa for ten years or more longing to be served by the same taxi driver. Most taxi drivers and their regular clients are no more just a taxi driver – customer relationship.

Sensitization workshop on child abuse in tourism for the new recruits of Dristhi

Centre for Responsible Tourism conducted a sensitization workshop on child abuse in tourism for the new recruits of Dristhi. Around 40 recruits attended the training.

Drishti Lifesaving provides professional lifeguard services on behalf of the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa deployed across Goa. Over 700 trained lifeguards provide dedicated service across every single beach stretch of Goa and internal water bodies of Doodh Sagar and Mayem Lake. The company operates a Beach Safety Patrol providing beach marshals from sunset till midnight. The beach marshals focus on women’s safety, assist tourists and deter tourists from venturing into the ocean.

The service has led to a 99% reduction in deaths due to drowning and significantly improved the tourist experience in Goa. Over 3,000 lives have been saved due to intervention rescue operations.

All of Drishti’s lifeguards are trained and certified by the Special Rescue Training Academy an internationally accredited training agency. The lifeguards are revalidated on an annual basis and need to maintain a robust on job training calendar

Life Guards on the beach can help identify and report any form of child abuse on the beach. Their presence on the beach enables them to be watchdogs and report any abuse to children on the beach.

The recruits were made aware of how to identify abuses and what they could do if they came across cases of child abuse on the beaches.

Cabbies vex ‘app’less commuters

PANAJI: Plagued with the lack of an efficient public transportation system in the state, citizens have always been at the mercy of tourist taxis to commute during the wee hours. This resource, however, has proven to be more of a bane for them. The main bone of contention is the lack of rate cards and the absence of meters, which implies that distances covered and fares charged can’t be registered.

This tends to give taxi operators a free hand to charge exorbitant fares, which, very often, goes unreported to the state department of transport.

With non-availability of transport at night, a number of professionals working late hours are left with no option but depend on tourist taxis.

Former event manager, Sharlene Pinto, shared her travails during her stint at an events company. “When we would hire manpower to help out at EDM festivals, we’d have to arrange transport for them to travel back home. This is mainly because after 10pm, there is absolutely no public transport service in Goa. Shuttling clients and performing artistes around would also become expensive owing to tourist taxis overcharging us. As a result, we had to purchase our own vehicles to transport people around,” she rued
The extortionist attitude of these operators also discourages students studying outside Goa to rent cabs. “Since most cabbies overcharge, I have to depend on family and friends for a pick-up from or a drop to the airport. This becomes a matter of serious inconvenience for those of us who travel often,” Uma Kodali Nutulapati, a student, said.

A frequent traveller to Mumbai and Bengaluru, South Goa-based lawyer Amey Hegde Desai, opined that it’s high time Goa implemented the taxi app services that are running successfully in several Indian cities.
“Goa requires a 24-hour transport service owing to its nightlife and flourishing tourism. We need multinationals like Ola and Uber to invest in the state so that people can have a safe mode of transport at their disposal, without the fear of being cheated. The taxi stakeholders in the state need to be educated on this. The government needs to think beyond its taxi vote bank and cater to the needs of the common man in Goa,” Dessai said.
Sharing his thoughts on the issue, a prominent transport official told TOI, “The problem lies in the taxi operators’ lack of understanding how these multinationals work. They’ve developed a misconception that Ola/Uber will put them out of business and even increase the density of taxis in the state, which is not the case.”
When asked about problems regarding overcharging and bad behaviour, the official said, “There are not many who come forward to complain about such operators. When there is a criminal case registered, the police forwards us a report, following which we can act against the driver concerned.”
