Dudhsagar tourists to register online

The carrying capacity of the Dudsagar waterfalls needs to be studied. This is an eco-sensitive area and having uncontrolled number of tourists will only lead to destroying nature and ecology.

With tourists starting to throng Dudhsagar lake, having been kept off Dudhsagar falls, the administration has now made it mandatory for visitors to register online.

The lake is situated in deep forest that comes under Bhagwan Mahaveer wildlife sanctuary in the Western Ghats and forest officials have restricted the entry to 225 jeeps per day to the lake. During peak season in April-May, 225 jeeps is very less as they can ferry only 1,575 tourists.

The increased demand for vehicles has even led to scuffles between the tourists and the jeep operators.

“To avoid such incidents, the government has planned to register the tourists online from the coming season, from October. The tourists will get entry as per the registration,” collector, south Goa, Swapnil Naik said.

Charter trains could make comeback at Dudhsagar falls, govt eyes tourist flow

Its a good idea to introduce a charter train. The government should also develop basic infrastructure for tourists who will visit the area.

After having the Dudhsagar waterfall ‘offbound’ for a year, authorities have suggested that ‘charter trains’ could solve the issue.

A charter train was operational on the Colem-Dudhsagar route in 2011 on a trial basis. After an incident of an attack by a mob of visitors on an express train on July 12, 2015, the railway protection force (RPF) has banned the entry of visitors at the scenic Dudhsagar waterfalls at Colem in Dharbandora taluka.

For the first time in history, the popular tourist destination has worn a deserted look for nearly a year now. With the exception of RPF personnel and local police staff, nobody is seen at the falls. This is in stark contrast to when a large crowd of visitors would be seen every weekend.

Dudhsagar waterfall is equally popular among Indian and foreign tourists. Dudhsagar, literally means Sea of Milk, is a four-tiered waterfall and is among India’s tallest waterfalls with a height of 31 metre and an average width of 30 metre.

The charter train that was started on a trial basis by the Goa tourism development corporation in 2011 used to ferry tourists from Colem railway station to Dudhsagar railway station and vice-versa. The train was discontinued after having less response as the tourists used to prefer the general trains passing through the route, said collector, south Goa, Swapnil Naik.

Now, the south-western railways has also agreed to offer an engine with three bogies to run the charter train on the Colem to Dudhsagar route, Naik added.

Liquor, casinos too have place on Goa tourist map: Deputy CM

After so many years in politics the Deputy CM does not even know how to speak in politically correct language. How can he say that Goa is good for liquor and gambling by the statement he makes a laughing stoke of the state.

Goa Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza today said the coastal state is a place for liquor and casinos along with other tourist attractions and maintained the casino industry is generating revenue for the government.

“Goa is a place for liquor, sun, sand, dance. It is also known for casinos, pilgrimage tourism, honeymoon destination, hinterland tourism and as Electronic Dance music (EDM) destination,” D’Souza said here.

He was talking to reporters on the sidelines of national summit on ‘Smart Cities in Era of Digital India‘ organized by Goa government.

Responding to a question on labelling the coastal state as a casino destination, D’Souza said “Goa is not known just for one thing. Casino is not the only reason for tourists to visit the State.”

The BJP leader said there are several reasons for tourists to come to Goa.

“Casino industry is helping the state government earn revenue. If we didn’t want it why did we allow it at the first place?” the Deputy Chief Minister asked.

Drug trade and prostitution have given a bad name to Goa but these possibles can not be solved overnight, he maintained.

Goa has four off-shore and more than a dozen on-shore casinos. BJP had promised to shift the off-shore casinos from river Mandovi during its 2012 Goa Assemblycampaign, but it is yet to act on the promise.

Opposition parties have criticised the BJP-led government for failure to fulfil its pre-poll promise. RPS RSY PVI

NGO, locals to crack down on child labour

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/NGO-locals-to-crack-down-on-child-labour/articleshow/52664814.cms

Calangute: Locals from Calangute, along with the non-government organisation (NGO), Childline, will hold an awareness drive against the use of child labour in Calangute on Saturday.

Based on information received from the public, they will also conduct raids at any establishment found employing child labour with the assistance of police, said Calangute zilla panchayat member Shawn Martins.
June 11 is International Child Labour Awareness Day.
“We will hold an awareness drive and also go around to check. If we find child labour, we will rescue them,” Martins said. Although, child labour is banned, a number of establishments in Calangute allegedly employ children. Martins, along with locals, had recently formed Neighbourhood Watch committees in Calangute to keep a strict vigil on beggars, especially child beggars and launched a crackdown on the beggars with the help of an NGO and police.

The awareness drive is also being done by the ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ committees as the residents of each area are aware of the places, where child labour, mostly migrants, are being employed.
