For long, tourists arriving at Goa were often baffled at the character, or the lack of it, of Goa’s lone airport. Despite being a globally recognized destination, the arrival and departure facilities at Goa International airport fail to reflect the state’s ethos. This could well change now as Goa airport officials make earnest efforts to impress at the 2016 BRICS international summit.

BRICS is an association of five major emerging national economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and the eighth annual BRICS summit is scheduled to be held in Goa on October 15 and 16.

Airports Authorities of India (AAI) officials have written to the Goa tourism department seeking their help to depict Goa’s natural beauty and culture through murals and art.

“We have written to the department to see how Goa can be depicted in the airport lounge, but have not received any response so far. Since we don’t have much space we can’t do much, but efforts are on to make the airport greener,” said airport director B C H Negi .

The airport director also informed STOI that in order to make the immigration process smoother for visiting delegates, Goa airport intends to add 20 additional immigration counters at the airport.

Plans to spruce up the premises are afoot to ensure that the airport sports a vibrant look before the BRICS summit which is an opportunity to showcase Goa to the world. The airport administration has already begun work to introduce some shrubs and greenery in the front facade of the premise.

Prominent BJP leader linked to casino: Madkaikar

it has always been clear that all the pre elections talk of the BJP was just an eyewash

speaking to media persons at Ribandar on Wednesday, Madkaikar said he had hoped that the government would remove the floatel after the July 7 agitation, but expressed displeasure that it did not happen. “I have information that a prominent BJP leader is closely linked to the floatel, due to which the government is unwilling to act. When I get all the proof, I will reveal the name of the leader,” he stated. Madkaikar informed that a resolution has been moved against the casinos in the Assembly and also a calling attention motion would be moved. The Cumbarjua MLA also said revenue is leaked as there is nobody to monitor the number of people entering the casinos. “Around 5,000 people enter casinos every day, but only 800 are shown,” he said, while stating that the revenue earned should be Rs 5,000 crore and not Rs 245 crore that the government currently gets. “Black money is converted into white money in these casinos,” he added as people enter with huge wads of cash and there is nobody to monitor where this money comes from. Madkaikar then expressed fear that Goa is being turned into another Macau. “After Las Vegas, Goa is the second destination where maximum players gamble and maximum revenue is earned,” he stated.

Govt using back door to legalise beach houses

http://englishnews.thegoan.net/story.php?id=20924

The state government has the unique distinction of firmly stating, in an ordinance, that constructions built on beaches and river fronts in violation of CRZ norms would not be
regularized, but surprisingly, the same government is using the back door to legalise them. The ordinance allows the regularisation of unauthorised construction in most cases save if the land in question falls either in protected forest, wildlife sanctuary, coastal regulation zone, eco sensitive zone, khazan land or if the construction obstructs the natural flow of water or is constructed through filling water bodies or that of scrapyards. However, the government is also simultaneously pursuing a proposal before the Centre to regularise houses deemed illegal under CRZ regulations. In a submission made before the Shailesh Nayak committee in 2014, the government stated that structures of traditional communities, though built after 1991 ought to be regularised.
Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar confirmed the development saying that while the State government has proposed, it was up to the central government to decide. “We have sent the proposal. We have put forth our views. Let us see what they decide,” Arlekar said. Given that the move to regularise unauthorised structures in private lands has already caused consternation in certain quarters, the move the regularise those in CRZ as well is likely to upset even more campaigners. “Some of the states and union territories, especially Goa had argued that several dwelling units of local
Protest against Ordinance
The ordinance has led to protests in certain quarters saying that the move is part of the government’s attempts to garner votes ahead of the elections. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has pitched that not just dwellings of those traditional communities but even ‘part
commercial’ establishments be regularised “Several traditional occupants of the CRZ areas have begun either rooms to let or bars and restaurants or other businesses in their houses, which are legal as per the CRZ notification, but the business is not,” Lobo said. “We will meet the Union Minister of Environment and Forests and ask that these traditional occupants too are not being made to face harassment and provide them some
relief,” Lobo said. communities have been constructed in violation of the CRZ notification. Keeping in view the larger public interest the State sought regularization of dwelling units of traditional coastal communities including fisherfolk,” the Nayak report stated. The MoEF had constituted a six-member committee on 17 June 2014 under the chairmanship of Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, MoEF to examine the issue.
