In 2011, Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT-Goa) in collaboration with Tourism Concern, UK commissioned the study ‘Reclaiming Water Rights: Towards an Equitable Social Contract in Goa’ under the Water Equity in Tourism (WET) programme. The study aimed at generating knowledge and understanding that contributed to the evidence base to advocate for water rights in tourism and the promotion of sustainable and equitable solutions. The study was rights-based and premised on the perceived need for: local communities to reclaim their water rights; an equitable redistribution of water resources in tourism; protection and conservation of natural resources; and participatory decision-making of all rights- holders through an equitable social contract.
